BIMaire, a Berkshire Hathaway company leading in home building technology, ventured into Virtual Reality home tours using Unreal Engine 4.27. Despite the promise, the project was marred by technical inefficiencies. CXR.Agency was brought in to optimize the application for the Oculus Quest 2 platform, focusing on asset optimization, performance, and user experience.

  • Application Stability: Crashes occurred during transitions between the project's 126 additive-loaded levels.
  • Performance: Frame rate drops in larger rooms, high level loading times (15ms against a standard of 5ms)
  • Asset Complexity: High-poly 3D models were not optimized for mobile VR rendering.
  • User Interface: Non-intuitive design, lacking effective hand-tracking and UI elements.

  • 3D Asset Optimization: Reduced poly count by 49%, and optimized materials from 105 to fewer than 20 using Texture Atlas Techniques.
  • User Interface: Implemented Oculus Quest 2's hand-tracking capabilities and designed intuitive gestures.
  • Performance Tuning: Utilized occlusion culling techniques and optimized level loading times to meet Oculus Quest 2 standards.
  • Shader and Texture Optimization: Replaced complex procedural shaders with optimized versions and employed texture atlasing.
